SunPoker Rakeback VIP Club Details

Formerly part of CryptoLogic, SunPoker is now part of the iPoker network and offers a VIP Club program. Players are automatically enrolled as soon as they play their first cash game. As VIP Club members, cash players earn "Shine Points" that can be redeemed at the cashier anytime at a rate of $1.00 per 1000 points, with 5000 Sun Points being the minimum redemption level ($5).
SunPoker does NOT offer rakeback of any kind. However, they have a VIP program which acts like rakeback through the accumulation of points.
Sun Points are accumulated at different rates depending on what VIP level a player has attained. The higher a player climbs, the faster they earn cash redeemable points. Also, higher levels gain entry into exclusive, high payout freerolls. There are five levels total to SunPoker's VIP system. Players that attain the highest level accumulate Shine Points faster than those at all the lower levels.

SunPoker Rakeback Through VIP Levels
At SunPoker, moving up VIP Levels gets you more points for playing the same games. Take a look at the chart below:
As you can see, a player who rakes $1 at Level 5 gets more than 3x the points than a Level 1 player. Since points can be redeemed for cash, we recommend you soar up the VIP ladder as fast as you can. Shine brightly at the Sun Poker tables and put in some time and you can make to Level 5.
All players start off at Level 1. As the chart indicates, Level 2 is made when you accumulate 5,000 Shine Points in a month. Reaching subsequent levels requires you earn the number of points indicated in the table above. Remember, you only have a month in which to change your VIP Level; however, moving up levels earns you point multipliers so earning points is easier as you level up.
You can cash in your points at any time. You can redeem points at a rate of 1,000 points Shine Points per dollar. 5,000 points is the minimum amount you can reddem. To illustrate, you could redeem 100,000 points for $100 but you could not redeem 1,000 points as it below the minimum redemption threshold of 5,000 points.
Exactly how does this VIP substitute for rakeback then? It's all about the Shine Points. The more points players earn, the more money they earn by trading in their points for cash. Remember that for each 1000 Shine Points redeemed, $1 is given.
Here is an example:
Using the Pot limit and No Limit schedule for stakes of $0.50/$1 up to $10/$20, on the SunPoker website, the maximum rake in a heads-up pot is $1. On average each player is then paying $0.50 in rake when the pot is big enough for maximum rake to be achieved. For a player that has attained the VIP 3 level, this means he would accumulate 17.50 Sun Points for that hand (see VIP Levels table at top of page). On the other hand, a VIP 1 player would only receive 10 Shine Points; that is 75% less than the VIP 3 player. In other words, play alot and you will be rewarded.
To understand how Shine Points earned through SunPoker's VIP Club can translate into rakeback, one needs to first understand SunPoker's rake schedule. The house generally commissions between 0% and 5% of each total pot. SunPoker do not charge a rake if the hand ended before the "flop" cards were dealt - "No flop no drop." If you are dealt cards in a hand then you are deemed to have contributed to the pot and therefore you are allocated an equal share of the rake taken. This is regardless of whether you fold straight away or not. If for example the rake taken on a particular table is $3 and there are six of you playing, then your rake consideration is $0.50.
